DRAW A LASSO ROPE

A lasso is a joined up rope, used for catching animals. It’s also called a lariat
Let’s draw a sideways oval. Now put a hangey down part. (That’s the part of the rope the cowboy or cowgirl holds in their hand.) Draw a little scribble where they meet (That’s the knot.)

Let’s do a “fast-draw funny.” Turn it up-side-down. The hangey down part is pointing up now. That will be one horn. Draw another. Draw a bigger sideways aval, overlapping the first one. Draw two nostrils in it. Draw two eyes in the top oval. Maybe he’ll stick his tongue out.

Now let’s draw a close up of the rope. Draw two guidelines, like when you practice writing. Put evenly spaced diagonal lines along it. Make a humpy line over each of the top sections. Now make a humpy line under each of the sections. This kind of detail can make a rope picture look realistic)

DRAW A COWBOY HAT

draw a horizontal line, one quarter of the way down. Now, a little ways down from that on the left side, loop to the left, up and over, and down to the center, then up to the other side, and back down to the other side of the head. See, the hat‘s fittin’ on the head. Not just sittin’ on the head. Lets give the hat some height. Maybe with a gentle “M” shape.
(For more fun, draw any kind of face you like on the head.)

DRAW A CACTUS

Draw a vertical line. On the left, near the top draw an “L” meeting he first line. (It looks sort of like “4” doesn’t it?) On the right draw a backwards “L” meeting the first line. If a cactus had a skeleton, it would look like this. Now draw a line around this framework. Keep it loose and curvy. If you want to add details, add some vertical lines. Also add lots of dots. (Hey, that’s like a super short poem; “Lots of dots.”) They are the prickers.

COMBO ANIMAL

Think of two different animals. Draw a picture combining their characteristics. Give it a name. Try another.

DRAW A MESA

Sometimes in western landscapes you see mesas. A mesa is a mountain that’s flat on top.
Draw a horizon line.
Then start above it and draw from left to right, then curve up, go straight, then curve down.

DRAW A HORSE HEAD

(This one is easy.)
Draw a sock. Turn it up-side-down. Turn it into a horses head, by a adding details like eye, ear, nostril and mane.

DRAW A WHOLE HORSE

(This one’s not so easy.)
Draw two circles. Connect between them with curvy lines. Draw a triangle slanting up from the front. Draw a smaller triangle to the right of the top of it, overlapping it. Round it off. Extend the front of the big triangle down to make a leg. Thicken it up a bit. The back leg is thicker at the top and has a funny curve. Lets add some details, like tail, eye, ear and mane.

DRAW A BOOT

Start with a vertical rectangle. Draw a sideways triangle. Lets make the outline shaped more natural like. Let’s add a heel. And we can add a little rectangle at the top. That’s the tab cowboys use to pull ‘em on. Western boots often have fancy designs on them. Make up your own design for a boot.

DRAW A WESTERN LANDSCAPE

This picture will combine some things you have learned. Near the top of a horizontal piece of paper, draw a horizontal line.. Draw some mesas along it. Draw some cactuses. Draw a horse. Add clods and any other details.
[Insert Art; Combo animal]

COWBOY CRAFTS

MAKE A STEER HEAD – Positive/negative style.

(What you need; 2 sheets of different colored paper, (same size), scissors, pencil, glue or glue stick.)
Draw half a steer head on the smaller paper at the right edge. Cut it out. Now put glue on the back of the leftover part. Glue it onto the left of the big paper. Flip over the ½ steer head. Put glue on it Glue it down, lining it up so you see a full steer head. This picture looks tricky cause it mixes up the positive and negative spaces.

MAKE A BOLO TIE

(What you’ll need… cardboard, yarn, aluminum foil, tape, markers and a {big} paperclip.
When cowboys dressed up they wore a kind of tie called a bolo tie. Let’s make one. First we’ll cut square, about 2 inches. Cover with foil, (so it looks like silver), wrapping around to the back. Tape it. And fold the yarn in half, and place it vertically from point to point on the back. (that makes it a diamond). Place a paper clip horizontally across it. Tape over the sides. See if it slides. Flip it over and decorate the front. Any design is cool, or consider an arrowhead, star, boot or oval that could be a gemstone.

MAKE A BANDANNA

(What you’ll need… 2 sheets of construction paper (red perhaps), (same size), scissors, pencil, markers.)
A bandanna is a cloth neckerchief worn around the neck. We’ll make one out of paper, that we cut into a square. Place one sheet vertically. Hold the other sheet horizontally on it, lining it up at the bottom. Trace the top. Cut with scissors. Fold it diagonally. Add any designs to this triangle, and perhaps the other side too.

MAKE A VEST

(What you’ll need… paper, scissors, pencil, markers or crayons.)
Fold paper in half vertically. Position with fold on the right. Draw curve on upper left, and slanting down line on the upper right, and a slanting down line on the lower right. Use scissors to cut these. Open the paper, and draw a vertical line down the center. Draw buttons. Draw dash lines along edges, to show stitching. Make short vertical cuts at the bottom to show fringe. Color vest brown or another color
